Another good article from ClickZ. This one is rightfully titled, "The Brand Promise." Something that goes to the core of another project I am working on with several well-recognized designers and webzine publishers from all over the world.... We are not selling the product; we are selling the idea of the product. Perhaps one of the best recent examples of this is Marc Klein's Creative Republic.

Ok, I know we mention Jeffrey Zeldman a lot on this page, mainly because I work along side of this genius on his site A List Apart. But this week we have posted his name in our headlines more often than not. Jeffrey Zeldman, unofficially known as the busiest web guru alive, although he would never admit to it. As you can see reading though this week's "What's New" posts he is anything but resting. Just to name a few things that he did over the last week:

If I had a say, this week would officially be called Jeffrey Zeldman Week.

Is it just me or is everyone getting a book deal? The latest news is that Derek Powazek (the genius behind The Fray) just signed a book deal with Macmillan. This following news that Jeffrey Zeldman also received a book deal. Hats off to both of you, this is all well deserved. The web guru gets published.

Being home sick sucks... there is never anything on TV and nothings going on online. Well, thank heavens it's Friday and thank A List Apart for releasing the forth issue of the ever so famous "Fear of Style Sheets" series by Mr. Zeldman himself. For those of you who haven't yet used CSS I have one thing to say to you; it's been four years since the first recommendation has been released, what rock are you hiding under? It's time to overcome your fears.

After many many 3-hours-of-sleep-every-24 hours-cycles, yet another online webdev community site is launched. It's called Wise-Women. The Publisher and List Mom/Founder is Dori Smith of JavaScript fame. The editor/art director is me.
OK, so now I can concentrate a bit more on that other community thing Nick. :)

Jeffrey has a new edition of HTMLHell on Adobe for your reading pleasure. This one's rightfully entitled "Style vs. Design" I think it says a lot about what we see, hear and breath regarding the web. Read this, it's good for the soul.

Many people have asked me why I haven't pursued putting Digital Web Magazine on the press and release a printed version. explains it better than I could in the article "When magazines lose their charm" by Scott Rosenberg. It's all about the signal to noise ratio.

A new issue of A List Apart... this one strikes a chord with me, Bob Jacobson goes into detail about what most designers are missing; designer to designer collaboration... which also happens to be something that I am working on with a new project that has yet to be named... keep checking this page, I'll talk more about it later.

To add to my little rant on e-commerce... I am in the market for a new truck... something to replace my old Ford Explorer. Toyota's corporate site had some useful information... but things only got worse from there. I searched for a dealer and found the two near my location. I decided to check out Beaverton Toyota. It looked promising... then I discovered that most of the site had no useful information other than an inventory of their used cars... that's more than we can say for Royal Moore Toyota which had no inventory at all. Digging deeper into Beaverton's site I noticed that 1/2 of the site wasn't even completed... navigational bars linked into pages of gibberish text (obviously for placement, but yet unfinished). Keep in mind that this is a site linked in from the Toyota corporate site. Some companies just do not belong on the web.

Value America closes shop... good bye and good reddens... don't let the door smack you in the back on the way out. With that said, I ask you, when will the web grow up and get a clue? Talk about media over-hype... "Yes you can have your own e-commerce website, you customers will be able to buy with a simple point and click!" Give me a brake. You and I know there is a lot more that goes into a website than just putting it online regardless of how will the interface is designed or how easy the shopping cart is. May Value America and Boo rest in peace and shine as an example of how not to embrace the web.

How much talent does it take to ripoff someone's creative work? How much money can you make by stealing someone's beautiful design? How much blood shall we spill people? How much pain do we have to see before people start realizing it's about being unique and creative in your own way. Marc proposes a Black Board and I stand behind him.
